Fiber optic cables are applied in almost every area. They are used in telecommunication, medical and even in entertainment. When you look at the cable you might have the impression that it’s made up of only one part but this isn’t the case. The cable has many parts that include:


This is the very center of the cable and is made up of a thin piece of glass that provides the path that light travels. The core has an outside diameter of 125 microns and is found in both single-mode and multimode fibers.


This is the optical material that covers the core. The material is usually glass but there are some exceptions where there are some cladding materials that are made from plastic. The role of the cladding is to surround the core and also reflect light signals back to the core. If you didn’t know, light signals don’t travel in a straight like inside the core. From time to time they get out of their intended angle. It’s the role of the cladding to put these signals back to the core.

Buffer coating

As you might have guessed, the coating surrounds the core. The coating is usually made from plastic and its role is to simply protect the core from damage or moisture.


Also known as the outer sheath, the jacket is the last part of a fiber optic cable. It’s made up of tough polyurethane material and its role is to protect the interior components of a fiber optic cable. In most cases, the jacket is the last part of a cable, but there are other cables that have an additional layer between the buffer coating and jacket that prevents the cable from stretching or breaking when it’s pulled through a duct or conduits. The extra layer is known as Aramid. Most of the cables with this layer are often more expensive than the traditional ones.

Taking care of the optic cables

If you are planning of installing the cables in a large area, the units can be expensive. To avoid replacing them every now and then you need to take good care of them. During installation, always ensure that they are installed by a professional who is experienced enough. Dust and moisture are two of the main enemies of the cables. For the units to continue working effectively for long you should regularly clean them using high-quality products.
